A long drive to this beautiful place.
A must visit of this iconic monument. There is an evening monument lighting ceremony which has a historical video presentation. Entry fee includes parking and re-entry for a year. There is a cafe, visitor center, and ice cream shop (though not on the menu, ordering their large scoop, you can ask the server for more ice cream to make a 'monumental scoop,' at their discretion).
Make sure to explore! There is a lot here but it is not laid out in a way that it is the easiest to find if you aren't looking. Go down the stairs and there is a theater and more info about the sculptor and the history of the monument. Of course the sculpture is interesting in itself, but I didn't realize how much work went in to the visitor section, too! The parking pass lasts the entire year, too. So you can come back if you want, and not have to pay it again if you hold on to the slip.
The Lighting ceremony was very patriotic and well presented. Never have had any problems with convenience for bathrooms and elevators during the day, but the night was a whole other story.
Blown away by the effort and history. I'm from Canada and I'm embarrassed we don't bring more of our exhibits to this level.
The only bathrooms available were at the very front entrance to the park. None were open anywhere near where the lighting ceremony was taking place. My grandma had great difficulty getting all the way there only to find out that absolutely none of the bathrooms were open. This is appalling! And rude! There were a couple hundred people there for the service and bathrooms should have been open at least in the gift shop! Seems to me like someone just didn't want to have to deal with an extra bathroom to clean..
